Our children have attended public school and are currently home schooled attending an online school. No matter the platform my husband and I have always worked closely with them in their journey in education. One thing I find consistent is that learning and doing school work is not always enjoyable. From before the time our kids started school we planted the seed in their minds that education is important and necessary part of their life. As they got older, they questioned the significance of some of the things that they were learning. I totally get where they are coming from. Just because I know children need to get an education doesn’t mean everything that is thrown at them is a meaningful use of their time and energy. I like to think of it as, “busy work.” Somewhere buried in that observation is a challenge. What makes learning amazing for you? That’s is a question I ask my kids and now present to you.
When I was a youth in school I was not the best student in high school. Now I can clearly see why. Environment, resources, and support play a big role in a child’s life. Those are some of the luxury’s as a child I didn’t have in common with what my kids have. We have been homeschooling now for 5 years, so I have spent time utilizing different techniques, but the common denominator is always finding what works for you. I don’t want to take time to tell you right now the things I feel are wrong with the education system, that’s another blog. My goal is to encourage and enlightened students that all hope of learning is not lost.
Willingness to Learn
Listen up youth, it all begins with what you are willing to do. I know you are faced with deadlines and sometimes the work piles up even when you are trying your best to keep up. The pressures are very real. I know better than to tell you that getting an education should be fun. The reality is we must will ourselves to do certain things that must be done. Most of us can probably can relate to the enjoyment of learning our favorite subjects. No one has to tell us how to enjoy it, it just happens naturally. When the topics don’t interest us or when the meaning of learning is hard to recognize that’s when it gets to be a challenge. Your “will” needs to be activated.
It’s like telling yourself, “I am going to learn something regardless of how difficult I think it is or how uninterested I am and it will be amazing.”
Believe it or not just because I’m an adult doesn’t mean I know everything. I’m still learning too, and it can be a challenge to learn some things even for me. The way I manage is to view learning as new discoveries. The deeper you dig the more treasures you find. In my estimation, knowledge is something we can never get an enough of. Some of the things you learn may seem to have nothing to do with what you want to do in the future, but that’s not a good reason to throw it out. The educational system wants students to have a well-rounded education, that means you will have a little bit of this and a little bit of that, to fulfill the goals they have set for you. I use it to your advantage by discovering as much as you can. You never know you might decide to go on a game show one day or travel to a foreign country and that stored up knowledge will come in handy. Like I tell my kids, this time is a golden time in your life where you have the time and the support, make it amazing!
Create your environment
What is your set-up for learning? Do you need music playing in the background or do you have a favorite chair that you sit in that starts your brain juices flowing? It may be as simple as just knowing your learning style. Whatever it may be for you, create it. I understand this might be a little difficult if you are in a brick and mortar school system, but it can still be done. You may have to make your needs known to your teachers or school administration. I have seen one teacher when my children were in brick and mortar play classical music while the kids were working on their lessons. It gave the classroom a calm, relaxed feeling. Your environment is important for a few reasons, it creates a mood, it can include helpful resources, and it can be a place where you feel the most comfortable to be free to learn. This is a freedom I encourage my children and other children to take advantage of with homeschooling and beyond.
The moment you are in right now is the right moment for learning. I wish I could stress that to every child I know. I realize there are situations that act as barriers to the learning process for some and that is unfortunate. I feel the school system should seek out solutions to those barriers more fervently so every child can learn and find something amazing about it, but like I said before that is a different blog. Again, my goal is to encourage and enlighten students. I hope you were informed about the importance of learning and encouraged to find a way to make your learning amazing!
